Gold Coast Public Transport: A Practical Guide for Getting Around
Using light rail, buses and trains to make everyday trips around the Coast easier

Getting around the Gold Coast without a car becomes much easier once you understand how the main pieces of the public transport network connect. Light rail, buses and trains each serve a different purpose, and the most useful journeys often combine more than one of them.

Start with the G:link

The G:link light rail is the most visible part of Gold Coast public transport and provides a useful backbone through the busy coastal corridor. For trips between major precincts, it can remove the need to search for parking and makes it easy to hop between several destinations in the same day.

If you are unfamiliar with the network, learning the major tram interchange points is a good starting point. Once those become familiar, connecting bus journeys are easier to understand.

Buses fill the gaps

Bus services extend the network into suburbs and destinations away from the light rail corridor. A trip that initially looks difficult may become straightforward when a short bus journey is paired with the tram.

The important thing is to plan the entire journey rather than looking at each service separately. Allow enough time for transfers, particularly if you are travelling with children, luggage or beach gear.

Trains for longer journeys

Rail services are useful for travelling between the Gold Coast and other parts of South East Queensland, including Brisbane. Depending on where you start and finish, a local bus or light rail connection may form part of the journey.

For someone new to the Coast, this can seem complicated on paper. In practice, a couple of successful trips can make the network feel much more manageable.

Public transport can simplify busy days

One of the best times to consider public transport is when a destination is likely to be busy. Major events, weekends and popular precincts can make parking more difficult, so leaving the car behind may turn out to be the less stressful option.

It can also work well for one-way outings. For example, you might walk a section of the coast and use public transport to return rather than retracing the same route.

Check before you leave

Routes, stops, timetables and service arrangements can change, so check current journey information before heading out. This is especially important when travelling early, late, on public holidays or during planned works and major events.

Give yourself some flexibility around connections. A trip feels much easier when you have allowed a few extra minutes rather than building a plan around a perfect transfer.

Use the network when it makes sense

Public transport does not need to replace driving for every journey. For many Gold Coast locals, the practical approach is simply knowing when the tram, bus or train is the easier choice.

Start with a familiar destination, learn the connections you are likely to reuse and gradually expand from there. Once you know the basic network, getting around the Gold Coast without automatically reaching for the car becomes a much more realistic option.

Sounds nice if you live along the coast! Out west in Nerang you still pretty much need a car.

Greg WilsonFair point. The bus routes west of the highway take forever compared to driving, though the park and ride at Nerang station helps a bit.

Tram turns up every few minutes during the day, you hardly even need to check a timetable.

That high frequency is exactly what makes the G:link such a fantastic coastal backbone! It’s always wise to double-check times, though, if you're travelling particularly early or late.

The tram is great but some of the bus timetables in the outer suburbs are totally useless.

    • JS

Outer suburb routes can certainly be trickier, which is why we always recommend checking timetables in advance and allowing plenty of buffer time for transfers.
