Gold Coast Coastal Walks: Five Routes to Explore
Choose a headland track or a foreshore stroll with practical tips on access and planning

A coastal walk does not need to take up the whole day to be worthwhile.

On the Gold Coast, you can choose a short foreshore stroll, explore a headland or spend longer following trails through coastal vegetation.

The most useful route is the one that suits your group, the weather and how you plan to get home.

This guide covers five Gold Coast coastal walks, with practical ways to choose your distance and plan the outing.

Route information was checked on 1 October 2026; confirm current access and closures before leaving.

1. Burleigh Head National Park’s Oceanview track

The Oceanview track follows the rocky headland between the Burleigh Heads township side and Tallebudgera Creek.

The listed distance is 1.2 kilometres one way, with about 30 minutes suggested walking time.

If you return along the same route, allow for both directions and any stops.

This is a graded national park track rather than a beachfront promenade, so check that it suits everyone joining you.

The route offers wheelchair access with assistance.

Toilets are near the northern entrance along Goodwin Terrace and near the southern entrance car park.

Sections may close when weather increases rockfall risk, making a current alert check essential.

Stay on the formed track and out of restricted boulder fields, including Cannon Rock.

The Rainforest circuit is a different option that includes steps and a steeper section, so do not assume it provides an equivalent accessible return route.

Domestic pets are not permitted in the national park.

2. Federation Walk Coastal Reserve, The Spit

Federation Walk Coastal Reserve stretches from Philip Park near Sea World towards the Seaway at The Spit.

Its trail network passes through coastal vegetation and an established dune environment.

Choose your route using the current reserve map rather than treating the whole area as one short loop.

You can make this an out-and-back outing, deciding on a turning point that leaves enough time and energy for the return.

Take water with you and check the location of amenities before starting.

Shade and surface conditions vary, so prepare for exposed sections as well as vegetation.

This is an option when you want a nature-focused walk rather than a shopping or café stop every few minutes.

Dogs must stay on a lead in the reserve; the adjacent designated off-leash beach has separate boundaries.

Keep to established trails and avoid walking through the dunes.

3. Coolangatta towards Rainbow Bay

An ocean pathway curves from Coolangatta around towards Rainbow Bay, offering a southern Coast walk that you can shorten to suit your day.

Begin with the section you want to explore rather than committing to a distant finish point.

The headland portion has a rise, so check the route and access conditions if slopes affect your comfort or mobility.

An out-and-back plan can simplify transport when everyone arrives at the same place.

Choose a turning point before the group becomes tired, especially when walking with children.

Allow time to stop and enjoy the view without blocking other path users.

A café visit can follow the walk, but check opening times if you have a particular business in mind.

You can also bring a drink and snack to keep the outing within your budget.

4. Broadbeach’s Kurrawa and Pratten parklands

The connected Kurrawa and Pratten parklands provide a way to combine a beachfront walk with places to sit, picnic or stop for play.

Kurrawa includes a boardwalk and esplanade, while the wider parklands offer paths and open space.

Toilets, picnic shelters, drinking facilities and benches make it easier to plan a shorter outing around breaks.

Start near the section you want to use most and choose how far to walk once everyone is comfortable.

If playground time is part of the plan, decide which play area you are heading to before carrying picnic gear along the route.

Watch for other people using the paths and leave room for bikes, prams and mobility aids.

Check parking limits and charges for the space you choose.

A short walk followed by lunch can be enough without adding a second destination.

5. Burleigh’s foreshore and Justins Park

For a walk outside the national park, consider the foreshore around Justins Park and The Esplanade.

This gives you a different Burleigh outing when your group prefers to stay near park facilities.

Justins Park has benches, picnic shelters, tables, drinking facilities and public toilets.

Choose a short section, then return for a picnic or a break.

The monthly Coastal Markets can make the area busier on the last Sunday, so check whether the event suits your plans.

If you bring a dog, follow the lead rules and keep it out of children’s playground areas.

Do not extend the route into the national park with a pet.

Choosing your distance

An advertised one-way distance is not the total for a return walk.

Allow extra time for rest stops, photographs and the pace of the slowest person in the group.

An out-and-back route gives you a simple way to shorten the day, while a one-way route needs a clear return transport plan.

Check the exact start and finish points before arranging a lift.

For accessibility, look beyond the word easy and consider surface, gradients, steps, assistance requirements and toilet access.

Ask about specific conditions when a particular feature is essential to your visit.

What to take

Carry water, sun protection and comfortable walking shoes.

Keep what you bring light enough to carry for the whole route.

Check wind and rain forecasts as well as temperature, and reconsider the walk during severe weather.

Start with a route close to home if you are unsure how much walking your group will enjoy.

Leave room to stop early without feeling you have missed the point of the outing.

A coastal walk can be a regular part of your week, whether you have half an hour or a longer morning free.

That ocean breeze along Kurrawa gets icy on winter mornings. Pack a windbreaker.

    • CM

Pete JenkinsIt really does bite early on. In summer that breeze is a lifesaver, but right now a jacket is mandatory.

Federation Walk gets super hot by midday with very little breeze. Go early in the day.

  • DP
    Dan P.· Oct 4, 2:49 AM

Always bring your own water bottle to The Spit. The refill taps are pretty spread out.

  • DF

People climbing all over Cannon Rock drives me mad. There are signs everywhere telling you not to.

    • JS
      Jay SaltonAuthor· Oct 3, 10:59 PM

It is so important, staying on the formed track and out of restricted boulder fields like Cannon Rock keeps both visitors and the headland safe.

  • N
    natalie_92· Oct 3, 2:07 AM

So important to stay on the path at The Spit. The dunes need protecting.

    • JS

Absolutely! Sticking to the established trails is essential for protecting the fragile dune ecosystem.

Plenty of clean public barbecues along Pratten Park. Perfect for an easy Sunday sausage sizzle.

    • MT

Nook espresso right by Burleigh hill is our regular stop after this walk. So good.

  • PH

Broadbeach is the best spot for my mum in her wheelchair. Wide paths and plenty of benches.

  • MH
    Matt Henderson· Oct 2, 8:04 PM

People still climb past the barriers at Cannon Rock just for photos. So dangerous.

  • LG
    Linda G.· Oct 2, 7:50 PM

That hill up towards Rainbow Bay gets your heart pumping. Worth it once you see the surf from up top.

  • AP
    Anita Patel· Oct 2, 5:29 PM

Burleigh markets on the last Sunday are crazy busy. Love browsing the stalls after a morning walk.

  • GB
    Greg B.· Oct 2, 5:14 PM

Great to see accessibility notes included. The path around the point has been upgraded nicely over the years.

  • M
    marko_88· Oct 2, 3:00 PM

That Rainforest circuit has way more steps than people expect. My calves were burning for days.

  • N
    Natalie_V· Oct 2, 1:53 PM

Do not forget a hat for the Federation Walk trail. The sun beats right down on you past Philip Park.

    • CL
      Craig Lawson· Oct 3, 2:57 PM

Natalie_VSeconding this. There is basically zero shade on that northern stretch once the morning sun climbs.

  • KS
    Kieran Smith· Oct 1, 12:25 PM

A dip at Tallebudgera Creek after doing the Burleigh headland is unbeatable. Pure bliss.

    • JS
      Jay SaltonAuthor· Oct 2, 5:33 AM

That sounds like the perfect reward after finishing the 1.2-kilometre headland track!

    • JM
      Josh M.· Oct 2, 3:24 PM

Kieran SmithMy absolute favourite routine on a Saturday morning. Just have to beat the crowd to get a spot on the sand.

  • J
    Jess_K· Oct 1, 12:21 PM

Justins Park gets totally packed on market Sundays. Still a lovely vibe for an afternoon stroll.

    • CR
      Chloe R.· Oct 3, 9:53 AM

Jess_KIt is chaotic for parking, but grabbing some food and sitting on the hill makes it worth it.

  • DW
    Donna W.· Oct 1, 10:44 AM

Federation Walk really feels wild compared to the rest of town. Take plenty of water though.

    • D
      Dave_C· Oct 2, 8:27 PM

Donna W.Second the water advice. Some of those inland stretches have zero breeze once the sun gets high.

  • ST
    Sam T.· Oct 1, 9:55 AM

Council meters at Kurrawa are getting ridiculous. Check the side streets for free spots.

    • JS
      Jay SaltonAuthor· Oct 2, 2:59 AM

Parking regulations can certainly catch you out, so checking nearby signs and time limits before setting off is always wise. Thanks for sharing!

    • FG
      Fiona G.· Oct 3, 1:12 AM

Sam T.The side streets fill up fast before eight these days too. If you are coming from further north, the tram down to Broadbeach South is much less stressful.

  • LP
    Liam P.· Oct 1, 9:41 AM

Glad you mentioned the rockfall alerts. It was closed last month when we tried to go.

  • CD

    • JS

That sounds like a wonderful routine! Pairing that scenic headland walk with a sweet stop is a fantastic way to enjoy the southern Coast.

  • KD
    Kylie Davies· Oct 1, 7:22 AM

That rainforest track at Burleigh is definitely not flat. My calves were burning on those stairs.

    • B
      Bec_H.· Oct 1, 12:11 PM

Kylie DaviesSame here. I made the mistake of doing it in flat sneakers once and felt it for days. The coastal path is way gentler.

    • JS
      Jay SaltonAuthor· Oct 2, 4:45 PM

Thanks for highlighting that! The Rainforest circuit certainly steps things up with its stairs and steeper sections, which is why we recommend the Oceanview track if you need an easier gradient.

  • BS
    Brad S.· Oct 1, 7:00 AM

Grab a cold brew at Rainbow Bay surf club after the walk. Best spot to watch the surfers.

    • TB
      Tim Brennan· Oct 2, 10:01 AM

Brad S.That balcony view is unbeatable. It gets pretty packed by mid-morning on weekends though, so get in early.

  • T
    Trent_B· Oct 1, 5:52 AM

Wish more people kept their dogs on leads along Federation Walk. Great track though.

    • WP
      Wayne P.· Oct 1, 11:14 AM

Trent_BTotally agree. The off-lead beach is right next door, so there is really no excuse to let them loose on the track.

    • JS
      Jay SaltonAuthor· Oct 2, 11:09 PM

We couldn't agree more, while the nearby beach has designated off-leash zones, keeping dogs on-lead within the reserve protects both local wildlife and other trail users.

  • EW
    Emma Watson84· Oct 1, 5:47 AM

The off leash beach right next to Federation Walk is heaven for my golden retriever.

    • JS
      Jay SaltonAuthor· Oct 2, 4:14 PM

It really is a fantastic spot for pups! Just be sure to clip the leash back on as soon as you transition back into the reserve trails.

  • TM
    Tony Miller· Oct 1, 5:42 AM

That Oceanview track gets closed so often after rain because of falling rocks. Always check the park alerts first.

  • BH
    Bec H.· Oct 1, 5:29 AM

Justins Park on Sunday afternoon is my go to picnic spot. Gets packed fast though.

    • JS
      Jay SaltonAuthor· Oct 2, 9:25 PM

It’s such a lovely spot for a picnic break! It gets particularly bustling on the last Sunday of the month when the Coastal Markets are on, too.

Kurrawa is brilliant with a pram. Paved all the way and the kids love the big playground.

    • JS

Early mornings along that headland are truly magic! Just remember to double-check local park alerts before heading out, especially after heavy weather.

  • JR
    Jess Roberts· Oct 1, 3:57 AM

Glad you mentioned the dog rules for Burleigh. So many people ignore the signs and bring dogs into the national park.

  • DK

The walk around Greenmount to Rainbow is unmatched. Best views on the whole coast.

  • S

Federation walk is great if you want to dodge the crowds. Take mozzie spray though.

Love the Burleigh headland walk. We always stop at the cove for a dip afterwards.
