Dog-Friendly Gold Coast Outings: Five Places to Explore |
Plan park walks and dog beach visits with clear guidance on designated off-leash areas |

Taking your dog out on the Gold Coast can be as simple as a walk through a local park or a visit to a designated dog beach.
The useful question is whether a place suits your dog, your plans and the access rules on the day.
A park with an off-leash area may also contain spaces where dogs are prohibited, and a dog-friendly beach does not make the whole foreshore off leash.
This guide covers five dog-friendly Gold Coast outings, with practical tips for choosing a visit and checking boundaries.
Location details were checked on 1 October 2026; confirm the latest access information and follow signs when you arrive.
1. Pizzey Park: a designated exercise area
Pizzey Park on Bardon Avenue in Miami includes a designated off-leash dog exercise area with a fenced agility course.
The wider precinct also has dog-prohibited areas, so head to the dog section rather than treating every open lawn as somewhere to let your dog run.
Keep your dog on a lead until you have entered the permitted area and checked the surroundings.
Facilities listed across the park include toilets, picnic shelters and tables, but check the distance from the dog area before settling on your plan.
An agility course can be interesting for dogs who enjoy exploring equipment, but there is no need to work through every feature.
Start with a short visit and watch how your dog responds to the other animals and activity.
If the space feels too busy, a quieter on-lead outing elsewhere may be a better choice.
2. The Spit: a beach outing with clear boundaries
The Spit has a designated off-leash dog beach, while Doug Jennings Park provides nearby walking and picnic options.
The park facilities include toilets, showers, drinking-water points, picnic tables and accessible parking.
Keep your dog on a lead through the park and access routes, and only release them within the signed off-leash beach area.
Check the beach conditions before choosing where to spend time.
A dog beach is an open environment, so recall and your ability to manage your dog matter more than having plenty of space.
Bring fresh water and a bowl rather than relying on your dog finding somewhere suitable to drink.
Doug Jennings Park lists vehicle access from 6 am to 8 pm, with no overnight parking permitted.
Check event and access notices before a longer trip, especially if your plan depends on parking close to the beach.
3. Laguna Park: a park visit in Palm Beach
Laguna Park at 130 Laguna Avenue includes a designated grassy off-leash area separate from its children’s playground.
The wider park has established trees, picnic areas, barbecues and toilets.
Follow the signs to distinguish the dog exercise space from the fenced play area and other parts of the park.
Dogs are prohibited in children’s playground areas, even when a dog exercise zone is nearby.
If your family is visiting with both children and a dog, plan who will supervise each rather than expecting everyone to use the same enclosed space.
The park surrounds a lake, so choose a route and stopping place that let you remain in control of your dog.
A short walk and a break in permitted park space may be enough for a relaxed outing.
4. Pratten Park: an option in Broadbeach
Pratten Park on Old Burleigh Road has a designated off-leash area at its southern end, opposite Broadbeach State School.
Dogs must stay on a lead outside signed off-leash areas and are prohibited in the children’s playgrounds.
The park also lists picnic shelters, barbecues, drinking facilities and toilets.
If you want to combine dog exercise with a picnic, check where the permitted dog space ends before choosing your table or patch of grass.
A familiar meeting point can help when friends arrive from different directions.
Keep the visit flexible if your dog becomes unsettled by nearby activity.
You can enjoy an outing together without making it a long social session with other dogs.
5. Broadwater Parklands: an on-lead walk
Broadwater Parklands in Southport welcomes friendly dogs on a lead in permitted park areas.
There are no off-leash dog exercise areas within the parklands.
Dogs are prohibited in the children’s playground areas and swimming enclosure.
This makes it an option for an on-lead outing rather than a free run or a dog swim.
Check the park map and choose a route that avoids the prohibited areas.
Leave space around other walkers, cyclists and families, and keep the lead manageable on shared paths.
A shorter section of the park can be enough, particularly if you are introducing your dog to a busier setting.
Plan your return route before your dog becomes tired.
Understand what off leash means
Use only designated, signed off-leash areas and check any time restrictions.
Your dog still needs immediate supervision and must respond to voice commands.
Keep the lead on when entering and leaving, carry waste bags and clean up promptly.
Do not let your dog chase wildlife or approach another person or animal without control.
Assess the space before letting your dog loose, even if you have visited before.
Check the full current conditions before using an off-leash area, including requirements for the person supervising.
Choosing an outing that suits your dog
A nervous dog may prefer a quiet on-lead walk to a crowded exercise area.
A dog that enjoys beach visits may still need a shorter session when conditions are hot, windy or busy.
Let your dog’s behaviour guide the length of the visit rather than trying to complete a planned route.
Watch for signs that the outing is becoming too much and be ready to leave.
Keep fresh water, a bowl, a lead, waste bags and a towel in your outing kit.
For a café stop afterwards, confirm that dogs are welcome in the seating area you intend to use.
Ask before entering rather than assuming every outdoor table is pet-friendly.
Make it an easy day out
Choose one destination close enough that travel does not take up most of the outing.
Check the weather, parking arrangements and any maintenance notices before leaving.
A short visit that works for your dog is more useful than a long outing that leaves everyone uncomfortable.

Love this list. A quick run at Pizzey Park followed by a puppuccino in Miami is our weekend ritual.
Fresh water is so critical at the beach. Dogs drinking sea water ends in disaster on the car ride home.
Bookmarking this for the weekend. Taking our rescue pup to Pizzey Park on Saturday morning.
Amy_84Just a heads up that Saturday mornings get very busy there. Going early before 8 am is usually much calmer for a rescue.
Never knew Pratten Park had an off-leash section. Definitely taking my cavoodle there tomorrow morning.
Enjoy your visit with your cavoodle! Just head down towards the southern end across from the school, and remember to keep the lead on until you're within the signed area.
Always ask at the cafes first! Found out the hard way at a spot in Southport last month.
Doug Jennings parking fills up by 9 am every single Saturday. Set your alarms early!
Nathan B.And leaving after 10 am is just as painful with the traffic crawl all the way down Seaworld Drive.
My rescue greyhound gets overwhelmed easily so on-lead walks at Southport are perfect for us.
Kylie_91We do the same with our greyhound. It is so nice having wide footpaths so you can easily step aside if another dog approaches.
The outdoor showers near Doug Jennings are a lifesaver for washing off the salt water.
Thanks for noting the playground rules. Too many owners ignore the signs at Laguna and let dogs run right through the swings.
Thanks for reading! Respecting those playground boundaries helps keep visits safe and enjoyable for both families and dog owners.
Laguna is such a peaceful park early in the morning. My kelpie loves the grass area.
Really appreciate the point about nervous dogs. Not every dog wants a hectic off-leash park.
The Spit beach is unmatched. Nothing beats watching dozens of happy dogs splashing in the waves together.
Parking near Pratten Park can be tricky around 3 pm because of the school across the road.
The agility gear at Pizzey is fun but start slow. My staffy was completely terrified of the ramps at first.
Greg P.Same with our lab. Took plenty of treats and three separate visits before he even touched the wooden walk.
Pizzey Park is huge. Perfect for tiring out an energetic puppy before lunchtime.
Broadbeach is great because you can grab a coffee on Old Burleigh Road right after your walk at Pratten.
Always keep a towel in the boot. A sandy, wet golden retriever in the back seat is no joke!
What other beaches on the southern end are off-leash? Wish Palm Beach had more designated areas.
Laguna Park has the best playground for the kids while my partner walks the beagle. Great setup for families.
Dividing supervision duties like that is the perfect way to visit Laguna Park! It lets the whole family make the most of the park safely.
hayley_gIt works so well. Plus the pirate ship playground keeps the kids busy for hours while you take turns walking the dog.
Picking up after your dog should be common sense. Still see way too many bags left behind at Pizzey Park.
Keep a short lead at Broadwater Parklands. The cyclists zoom past pretty quick on those paths.
Always pack an extra towel in the boot. Sandy wet dogs in the car ride home is chaos.
A towel in the car kit is an absolute lifesaver! Thanks for tuning in and sharing your go-to tip.
Dan_MillerA fitted waterproof boot liner was the best twenty bucks I ever spent after Spit trips.
Recall is everything at The Spit. Saw a dog bolt towards the dunes last week and the owner was panicked.
It really is essential in such a wide, open environment. Strong recall and keeping dogs leashed until you hit the designated zone makes all the difference.
That gate closing at 8 pm at Doug Jennings catches people out. Great heads up for sunset walks.
Are dogs allowed on the outdoor decks at the cafes near Broadwater? Would love some good cafe recs nearby.
Palm Beach dog owners are pretty lucky with Laguna. Love the big trees on hot days.
gaz_goldyThe shade is great there. Parking can get pretty tight around mid-morning on sunny weekends though.
Had a great picnic at Pratten Park last weekend. Super easy spot if you have a well-behaved pup.
Didn't realize Doug Jennings closed the gates at 8 pm. Good to know for evening walks.
Ryan O.Council rangers show up right on time too. You definitely do not want your car locked in overnight.
Took my golden retriever to the Pizzey agility gear once and he just sat on the ramp. Pretty hilarious.
Tom_GClassic golden retriever energy. Mine walked straight through the tunnel once and decided it was a day bed.
That sounds adorable! There is certainly no pressure to tackle the obstacles. Taking things at their own pace is the best approach.
Broadwater Parklands is lovely for a calm stroll. We grab a takeaway coffee and take our time.
Pizzey Park can get pretty chaotic on Saturday mornings. We prefer visiting on weekday afternoons when it is much quieter.
People really need to work on recall before hitting the Spit. Had a big dog jump all over our picnic blanket last week.
Good tip about Laguna Park playgrounds. Nice that the dog area is kept separate.
Thanks for reading! Keeping those spaces clearly divided makes managing both kids and pups so much easier.
The Spit is our absolute favourite dog beach. Pure joy seeing them run in the surf.
Jess CollinsNothing beats it on a calm morning. You just have to keep an eye on them near the seaway wall where the current picks up.
Wish more people would clean up after their dogs at the beach. Keep the bags handy everyone.
Pizzey gets way too crowded on Sunday mornings. We usually go on weekday afternoons instead.
Pratten Park is our regular spot after school drop off. Plenty of shade under the trees.
Chloe B.Great coffee spots right across the road too. Makes the post-drop-off walk so easy.
It really is a lovely location, especially being right across from the school. Glad to hear it fits so well into your daily routine!
So true about bringing extra water to The Spit. The sand makes them so thirsty!
emma_jMine always tries to drink the salt water if I forget the bowl. That never ends well on the ride home.
Absolutely! Having your own fresh supply on hand ensures they stay hydrated without being tempted by sea water.
Laguna Park is great for walks. Just watch out near the lake if your dog likes chasing ducks.
Glad you reminded people Broadwater is strictly on-lead. So many owners just ignore the signs there.
Thank you! With so many cyclists, walkers, and family areas sharing the paths, keeping pups securely on a lead makes the parklands safer for everyone.
Love taking my pug to Broadwater Parklands for a slow stroll. Plenty of shaded spots to sit and watch the boats.
That sounds like an ideal outing! A gentle, on-lead stroll with plenty of shaded breaks is exactly what makes the Parklands so enjoyable.
Parking at The Spit on weekends is a nightmare. Definitely get there before 8 am.
Great advice, arriving early definitely saves some stress. Just remember gates at Doug Jennings Park open at 6 am and close at 8 pm.
Really glad you mentioned Pratten Park. It is super handy having the off-leash zone right across from the school.
Glad it was helpful! It really is a convenient pocket of green space, provided dogs stay on-lead outside that designated southern area.
Definitely bring your own water bowl to the Spit. The sand gets super hot by midday and the taps are a long walk.
Laguna Park is lovely by the lake. Just keep an eye on them because some dogs love chasing the ducks into the water.
Very true! It's a lovely setting, but keeping control and ensuring dogs don't disturb the local wildlife around the lake is essential.
Matt K.Yeah my spaniel bolted straight into the reeds after an ibis last month. Total mud bath getting him out.
The agility course at Pizzey Park is so fun. My border collie loves running through the ramps.
Finding a park at Doug Jennings on sunny weekends is an absolute nightmare though. Best to go before 7 am.
Sarah JenkinsEven 7 am is pushing it in summer. We usually head over around 4 pm instead once the midday crowd clears out.
That is great advice! Arriving early is definitely wise, especially with vehicle gates opening at 6 am and spaces filling up quickly on sunny days.
Pizzey Park agility area is awesome. Our kelpie burns so much energy jumping over the hurdles there.
Brad S.Kelpies definitely need that kind of workout. What time do you usually go to avoid the biggest crowd?
Good reminder about Broadwater Parklands being on-lead only. Too many people let their dogs run loose near the kids playground.
Absolutely. Sticking to the on-lead rule and steering clear of the playgrounds and swimming enclosure keeps the parklands safe for everyone sharing the space.
The Spit is our absolute favourite on Sunday mornings. My border collie loves swimming out past the breakers!
Jake M.Just watch the current out there. It can pull pretty hard near the entrance on an outgoing tide.
