Burleigh Heads Guide: Beach, Walks, Food and Markets
Plan a relaxed visit around the headland, James Street and beachfront picnic spots

Burleigh Heads makes a useful starting point when you want a Gold Coast outing with a few different options close together.

You can spend time by the beach, explore the headland, browse James Street or settle into the park with a picnic.

The trick is choosing two or three things that suit your day rather than trying to turn a relaxed visit into a checklist.

This Burleigh Heads guide covers the main places to explore and the practical details worth checking before leaving home.

Information was checked on 1 October 2026; confirm current opening hours, transport arrangements and park alerts before your visit.

Start with the beach and foreshore

Burleigh Beach can be the focus of an outing even when you have no plans to swim.

Choose a short walk along the foreshore, take something to read or sit down for a break between other stops.

If swimming is part of your plan, use the patrolled area and swim between the red and yellow flags when they are operating.

The patrolled section is in front of Burleigh Heads Surf Life Saving Club near Goodwin Terrace and the Gold Coast Highway.

Check the conditions on the day rather than assuming a familiar beach will always feel the same.

For families, agree on a meeting point and keep the beach visit within everyone’s comfort level.

A walk and a picnic can be enough without adding water activities.

Choose a headland walk that suits your group

Burleigh Head National Park offers two main walking options with different distances and access requirements.

The Oceanview track follows the rocky coastline between the township side of the headland and Tallebudgera Creek.

It is 1.2 kilometres one way, with about 30 minutes allowed for the walk in one direction.

Allow time for the return journey if you are leaving your car or belongings near your starting point.

The Rainforest circuit is 2.3 kilometres return, with about 45 minutes suggested walking time.

It includes steps and a steeper section near Tumgun Lookout.

Choose the route based on your group’s mobility and energy rather than the distance alone.

The Oceanview track offers wheelchair access with assistance, while the Rainforest circuit is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Confirm the current route conditions if assisted access is essential.

Walk during daylight, carry drinking water and wear shoes with grip.

Remain on formed tracks and respect the restricted boulder-field areas, including Cannon Rock.

Track sections can close when conditions increase rockfall risk, so check alerts before setting out.

Domestic pets are not permitted in the national park.

If you are travelling with a dog, plan a different permitted walk rather than assuming the headland can be part of the outing.

Browse James Street

James Street brings together cafés, restaurants, boutiques, homewares and other shopping options.

It works as a separate visit or a stop after the beach, particularly when your group wants food and browsing rather than another walk.

Choose whether you are heading there for breakfast, coffee, lunch or shopping before deciding how much time to allow.

Check the opening hours of any business you specifically want to visit.

If someone needs indoor seating, room for a pram or a particular dietary option, confirm that before arriving.

Set a comfortable spending limit for the day so a casual browse does not become an unexpectedly expensive outing.

You can enjoy the area without buying something at every stop.

Use Justins Park for a picnic break

Justins Park on The Esplanade offers picnic shelters, tables, benches and barbecues near the beach.

Its sand-based playground is covered by a shade sail and includes swings, a slide and climbing equipment.

Public toilets are at the southern end of the park, with accessible facilities and accessible parking listed.

Parking options include the Justins Park car park and street bays along The Esplanade.

Check the relevant signs for limits and charges when you arrive.

Pack an easy picnic and a blanket as a backup if tables are occupied.

Choose your stopping place according to the shade and how easily you can supervise children.

If you bring a dog, keep it on a lead in permitted areas and out of the playground.

Visit the market on the right Sunday

The Coastal Markets at Burleigh Heads operates at Justins Park on the last Sunday of the month, from 8 am to 2 pm.

The stalls include makers, designers and food vendors.

Confirm the next market date before travelling, because the last Sunday can be the fourth or fifth Sunday of a month.

A market visit can fit around a picnic or a beach walk, but allow extra time for your arrival plan.

Bring a reusable bag and consider how you will carry purchases if you intend to walk afterwards.

Check the organiser’s latest trading update rather than relying solely on the usual schedule.

A simple half-day plan

For a morning built around walking, start with the national park after checking conditions, then choose breakfast or coffee near James Street.

Finish with a short foreshore stop if everyone still has energy.

For a family outing, start with Justins Park, bring lunch and make the beach walk optional.

On market Sunday, let browsing be the main activity and keep the rest of the visit flexible.

These are suggested combinations rather than fixed itineraries.

Adjust the order around the weather, bookings and the needs of your group.

Getting there and keeping costs manageable

Compare driving with public transport using current journey information for your actual travel date.

Check both the arrival and return journey, especially if you plan to stay for a meal.

Choose a parking location near the part of Burleigh you will use most, then check the walking distance to your next stop.

For accessibility needs, look up the local mobility map and ask venues about the specific arrangements you require.

The biggest costs may be transport, parking, food and shopping rather than the walk itself.

Bringing water and a picnic gives you more control over the budget.

Leave time to enjoy one place properly instead of moving on as soon as you arrive.
