A Local’s Guide to the Gold Coast Oceanway |
How to enjoy the coast on foot or by bike, one manageable stretch at a time |

The Gold Coast Oceanway is one of the easiest ways to experience the coastline at your own pace. Rather than being a single attraction, it is a network of coastal paths connecting beaches, parks and neighbourhoods, giving locals and visitors plenty of options for walking, running and cycling.
You do not need to do it all at once
The best way to approach the Oceanway is in sections. A short morning walk can be just as enjoyable as a longer ride, particularly when you combine it with a swim, breakfast or picnic. This also makes the Oceanway useful for people of different fitness levels.
Central areas around Surfers Paradise offer a lively experience, with beachfront views and easy access to cafés, shops and public transport. It is a good choice when you want the coast to be part of a broader day out rather than the only activity.
Head south for a different pace
Further south, the coastal areas around Miami, Burleigh Heads and Palm Beach have their own character. Parks, headlands and beachside neighbourhoods break up the route, making it easy to stop rather than treating the outing as a race from one point to another.
Burleigh is particularly useful as a turnaround point because you can combine a coastal walk with time in the park or nearby dining areas. If the beachfront is busy, slowing down and enjoying a shorter section is often the better option.
Explore the northern end
Main Beach and the Broadwater provide another style of outing. The wider open spaces around the northern end can work well for families, recreational riders and anyone who wants to spend more time outdoors without staying on a crowded beachfront strip.
One of the advantages of exploring the Oceanway gradually is discovering how much the scenery changes. The Gold Coast is often treated as one continuous beach destination, but each section has a noticeably different atmosphere.
Walking and cycling safely
Many parts of the route are shared spaces. Walkers, runners, cyclists, children and dogs may all be using the same path, so predictable movement and a little patience make a big difference. Cyclists should slow down around busy beachfront areas, crossings and places where pedestrians may suddenly enter the path.
If you are riding, take a bike lock if you plan to stop. For everyone, water and sun protection are sensible essentials. Early mornings can be especially pleasant, with cooler temperatures and generally quieter paths.
Plan around conditions
Weather, maintenance and local works can occasionally affect access. If you are planning a long route, check current conditions before leaving and have an alternative turnaround point in mind.
The Oceanway does not need to become an endurance challenge. Pick a stretch that suits the time you have, leave room for an unplanned coffee or swim, and explore another section next time. Piece by piece, it is one of the simplest ways to see how varied the Gold Coast coastline really is. |

Lived here for years and still find new little corners every time I go exploring.
It really is amazing how much variety there is along the coast. Exploring it bit by bit always seems to turn up something fresh!
Burleigh beachfront gets mental by 9am on a sunny Saturday. Get in early or skip it.
Having a picnic in the park at Miami after a morning stroll is our Sunday routine.
Steph_KThose grassy spots near the hill have the best breeze on warm days. Hard to beat that view.
I usually walk from Surfers down to Broadbeach and just jump on the tram back. Super easy.
That is a fantastic tip! Taking advantage of the tram makes it so easy to enjoy a relaxed one-way stroll without worrying about the walk back.
Tim O'ConnorThat is a smart way to do it. Beats turning around and doing the exact same walk back.
Love that it is flat almost the whole way. Perfect for my bad knees.
Linda W.Just watch out for the stairs and slope over Miami headland. That part can be tough on the joints.
Always check the wind forecast first. Riding into a southerly headwind on the way back is brutal.
That is brilliant advice! Factoring in the wind and weather is key to keeping the ride enjoyable rather than turning it into an accidental endurance test.
A quick ring of the bike bell goes a long way when passing people from behind!
Spot on, a little courtesy and predictable movement make a world of difference on shared paths. Thanks for sharing the helpful reminder!
Plenty of great breakfast spots right along the path in Palm Beach. Love this stretch.
Tayla H.Barefoot Barista is always my go-to around there. Coffee hits the spot every time.
Took the kids riding up around Broadwater on Sunday. Much wider paths and very stress free.
The headland views around Burleigh never get old. I walk it three times a week.
Thank you for reading! Burleigh really is special, and having those headland views alongside great spots for a coffee or picnic makes it such a rewarding stretch.
The electric scooters flying past people walking are getting out of hand on the beachfront.
Would be nice if council installed a few more water bubblers along the route.
Part of the path near Miami had some roadworks last week. Good to know to check before setting off.
Steve C.They had a detour set up on Tuesday. Good reminder to check before heading out.
Stopping for a quick dip at Burleigh midway through a ride is unbeatable.
Amy RogersBest feeling especially in the middle of summer. You dry off within ten minutes of riding anyway.
Surfers Paradise path is way too crowded for bike riding on weekends. Better off walking it.
That's a very fair point. Walking that section lets you soak in the lively atmosphere and pop into nearby cafés without the stress of navigating weekend crowds.
Doing small bits at a time is definitely the way to go. Nobody wants to walk 20k in the midday heat.
Take sunscreen and a hat for sure. There is barely any shade on parts of the southern stretch.
Great walk with the dog along Miami, but please keep your dogs on a short lead people!
Miami is a lovely stretch for a walk, and you're absolutely right. With so many different path users sharing the space, keeping pets on short leads keeps everyone safe.
Definitely bring a good bike lock. Had a friend get their bike swiped outside a cafe in broad daylight.
Dan F.That happens way too often unfortunately. I never leave mine unlocked even for two minutes to grab a takeaway.
Best thing about the path is stopping for coffee every two kilometres. Perfect Saturday morning.
Main Beach up to the Spit is my regular weekend run. Plenty of space and easy parking too.
The Broadwater path is so much better for kids on scooters. Way less chaos than Burleigh on a weekend.
Mark T.100%. Burleigh on a sunny Sunday morning is wall to wall people. Broadwater is much calmer.
Early mornings at Palm Beach are magical. Hardly anyone around before 7am.
Wish some of the cyclists would actually slow down near Surfers. Almost got clipped with my pram yesterday.
We're so sorry to hear that happened. As we mentioned in the piece, it's vital for cyclists to slow right down in busy pedestrian hubs like Surfers so everyone can enjoy the path safely.
Burleigh hill is always my favorite stop. Grabbing an acai bowl and sitting on the grass is the best.
